The Kaduna State High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of a bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to April 14, 2026.
El-Rufai appeared in court under tight security as proceedings continued in a case instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which has charged him with alleged financial impropriety and abuse of office. He pleaded not guilty to all nine counts filed against him on March 18, 2026.
During the session, the prosecution successfully applied to amend the charges, resulting in the removal of the co-defendant, Amadu Sule, from the case. The court granted the application, leaving El-Rufai as the sole defendant.
Counsel to the former governor, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail, arguing that his client does not pose a flight risk and is prepared to comply with any conditions set by the court. However, the prosecution opposed the request, contending that the gravity of the charges necessitates careful judicial consideration.
Presiding judge, Darius Khobo, declined to issue an immediate ruling following submissions from both parties. Instead, the court adjourned the matter to April 14 for continuation of proceedings and a possible decision on the bail application.
Speaking after the hearing, defence counsel noted that the charges were served on the legal team only on Monday morning, limiting their ability to proceed substantively. He stated that the defence would review the charges and respond accordingly.
El-Rufai remains in ICPC custody pending the court’s ruling on his bail application.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to El-Rufai’s prominence in Nigerian politics and his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
