Abuja — The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in God despite prevailing socio-economic and security challenges, declaring that “the dawn is coming” as Christians across the country mark Easter.

In his 2026 Easter message, signed by him and made available to CEOAFRICA, Archbishop Ndagoso described the resurrection of Jesus Christ as a profound symbol of hope, stressing that “even the deepest darkness must eventually give way to light.” He reflected on the just-concluded Lenten season, which partly coincided with Ramadan, noting that it offered a solemn period of spiritual renewal through self-examination, repentance, and preparation for the celebration of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection.

“Today, that sacred journey culminates in the empty tomb,” he said. “On behalf of the Catholic Bishops in Nigeria, I extend to you the transformative joy of the Risen Lord—Happy Easter! Christ is risen, Alleluia!”

The cleric observed that the Easter celebration comes at a time when many Nigerians are weighed down by grief arising from persistent insecurity, including insurgency, kidnappings, and armed banditry. He attributed the situation to years of poor leadership marked by selfishness, corruption, nepotism, and a lack of commitment to the common good, while expressing hope that the nation’s current trials would ultimately give way to renewal and restoration.

“We are sustained in hope and prayer that the anguish confronting our nation will be transformed into enduring relief,” he said, adding that the assurance that “weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” remains a source of strength. He further reassured citizens that God remains present even in moments of despair and emphasized that divine justice will prevail.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Archbishop Ndagoso urged Nigerians to take their civic responsibilities seriously, warning against voter apathy. He acknowledged widespread disillusionment among voters but stressed that abandoning civic duty is not an option, urging citizens to be informed, active, and responsible participants in the democratic process by ensuring they are registered and prepared to vote for credible leaders.

He also charged the Independent National Electoral Commission to uphold transparency and credibility in the electoral process, ensuring that every vote counts and that no eligible voter is disenfranchised, while affirming the Church’s readiness to collaborate in promoting justice and fairness.

Addressing Nigerians grappling with hardship, loss, and displacement, the CBCN President encouraged perseverance, noting that the resurrection signifies the possibility of new beginnings. “Because the tomb is empty, no grave—not even the challenges facing Nigeria—can hold back the power of renewal,” he affirmed. “The dawn is coming. Do not let go now; hold on to hope.”

He concluded with prayers for comfort for the bereaved and for a renewed season of peace, healing, and prosperity across Nigeria.
