The Senegalese Football Federation has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) challenging the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip the country of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
CAS confirmed on Wednesday that it had officially registered the appeal.
The move follows a March 17 ruling by CAF’s Appeals Board, which revoked Senegal’s title and awarded the championship to Morocco. The decision was based on findings that Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations after several players left the pitch in protest of a referee’s decision during a match.
In its filing, the Senegalese FA is seeking to have the Appeals Board’s decision overturned and to be reinstated as African champions.
CAS stated that Senegal has also requested an immediate suspension of the deadline for submitting its appeal brief until CAF provides the full grounds for its decision.
“A CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed to consider this matter. Following this, a procedural calendar will be established,” CAS said in a statement.
Under standard CAS procedures, the appellant has 20 days to submit a detailed appeal brief outlining its legal arguments, while the respondents are granted a further 20 days to file their defence.
However, CAS noted that, given Senegal’s request to suspend the timeline, it is not yet possible to determine the schedule of proceedings or when a hearing might take place.
The tribunal added that it will handle the case as expeditiously as possible while ensuring that all parties are afforded a fair hearing.
