Former Nigeria international and Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62.

His death was announced on Saturday by Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami, who shared the news via his social media platforms. According to Odegbami, Nwosu passed away at approximately 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, where he had been receiving intensive medical care since Wednesday, March 11.

In his tribute, Odegbami said Nwosu had been battling for his life in hospital for several days and described the former midfielder as a cherished colleague, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

Born in Imo State, Nwosu emerged as one of Nigeria’s most gifted midfielders, widely recognized for his vision, creativity, and technical excellence. He was the youngest member of the national team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, a landmark victory in which the then Green Eagles secured Nigeria’s first continental championship on home soil.

His performances during the tournament and in subsequent international competitions earned him acclaim as one of the most exciting players of his generation. He also enjoyed a respected domestic career, where he was known for his leadership qualities and composure on the ball.

After retiring from professional football, Nwosu remained active in the sport as a coach and mentor, contributing to the development of younger players and grassroots football initiatives.

His passing comes days after the death of former NFF technical director and Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who led Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and died at the age of 88, marking another significant loss for Nigerian football.
