U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday urged Australia to grant asylum to members of Iran’s women’s national football team after the players reportedly refused to sing their country’s national anthem during matches in Australia.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned that returning the team to Iran could place the players in serious danger.
“Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed,” Trump wrote.
He called on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to allow the players to remain in the country and seek protection.
“Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give asylum,” Trump said, adding that the United States would be willing to accept the athletes if Australia declined.
The situation has drawn international attention amid concerns about potential repercussions the players could face at home after declining to sing the national anthem, an act widely viewed as a sign of protest. Australian authorities have not yet announced any decision regarding possible asylum requests from the team.
