Suspected political thugs on Saturday reportedly attacked local government congresses organized by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Oyo State.

The incidents occurred amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the party in the state. The PDP in Oyo is currently divided into two factions, with one aligned with Wike and the other loyal to the state governor, Seyi Makinde.

The local government congresses organized by the Wike-aligned faction were scheduled to take place on Saturday but were disrupted when suspected hoodlums stormed the venues while proceedings were underway.

According to reports, about 10 people were attacked during the disruptions, while several vehicles were vandalised.

The chairman of the faction loyal to Wike in the state, Abdulrahman Akinoso, confirmed the incidents during a telephone interview on Saturday afternoon.

Akinoso said the attacks occurred in several local government areas, including Ibadan North, Ogbomoso North, Ibarapa Central and Akinyele.

“Our local government congresses were attacked across Oyo State — Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Igboora in Ibarapa Central, and Akinyele,” he said.

He added that three vehicles were vandalised at Gbolarumi House on Are Avenue in Bodija, Ibadan North, noting that about 10 people were affected across the state.

Further details on the incident are still emerging.
