President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the cashless payment system recently introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at airports across the country.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the directive on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Keyamo said the president instructed the aviation ministry to suspend the current system and conduct a comprehensive review to ensure the payment process functions efficiently without placing unnecessary burden on Nigerians.
According to the minister, Tinubu directed the ministry to “go back to the drawing board” and develop a system that will work seamlessly for airport users.
He also noted that the president emphasised the need for a quick resolution, adding that the government may involve private sector partners if necessary to improve the payment structure.
As part of interim measures, Keyamo said the government would introduce a hybrid payment system that allows travellers to make payments using either cash or electronic methods.
“For now, there will be a hybrid system whereby those who already possess cards can continue to use them, while those who prefer cash will also be allowed to pay. Private sector participants will also be engaged to help us develop efficient methods to ensure effective cashless collection,” the minister said.
The FAAN cashless payment system was launched earlier this week at the Lagos and Abuja airports. However, its implementation reportedly led to long queues and delays for travellers trying to access airport facilities.
