The Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Hajiya Wosilat O. Giwa, has issued a passionate call for introspection, unity, and renewed professional commitment among Nigerian pharmacists, insisting that the profession must rediscover the resilience and collective strength that once defined it.

Delivering her goodwill message at the opening ceremony of DABO 2025, the 98th Annual National Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) in Kano, Giwa challenged pharmacists to reflect deeply on their current realities and responsibility to the profession.

“I want us to have a deeper reflection of who we are and what we are as pharmacists,” she said. “Are we living up to our calling? Are we really happy with where we are today? Is there any way we can make improvement? Are you concerned that we can be more united than we are?”

She questioned the profession’s current level of cohesion and commitment, urging members to reunite as one strong force capable of defending and advancing pharmacy practice in the face of external pressures.

“Are you convinced that pharmacists should come together and form a formidable team and face all our opponents outside the profession?” she asked. “This is not a call to war, but a call to self-realization.”

Giwa reminded delegates that the profession has a long history of solidarity and courage, describing pharmacists as “more resilient, more determined, and more united than what we are seeing today.”

She therefore urged participants to use the conference not just for social or academic engagement, but as a platform to restore the profession’s lost spirit of collaboration, purpose and innovation.

“Let us use this conference opportunity. We are not reinventing the wheel. Let us bring back the old memories of the good things we have done to protect and project the image of the profession,” she said.

Giwa expressed hope that the gathering would trigger meaningful change, one that would not only strengthen the profession internally but reposition pharmacists as indispensable contributors to the nation’s health system.

“I hope that this singular opportunity will bring us the change that is desired, preferable, and one that will be a game changer for the pharmacy profession,” she concluded.

Her remarks drew strong applause from delegates, many of whom described her message as a timely reminder of the values and unity needed to secure the future of pharmacy in Nigeria.
