Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship standard-bearer in Kwara State, Senator Simeon Ajibola, has challenged his opponent, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, to live radio and television debate over their performance claims.
Ajibola threw the challenge on Sunday, in Ilorin, the state capital, while addressing groups of women, youths and different associations from across the 16 local government areas in the state.
State governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state, Alhaji Ahmed, said last week at a campaign rally that Senator Ajibola did not achieve anything as a three-term senator for the people of his senatorial district.
Governor Ahmed in his campaign at Isanlu-Isin in Isin Local Government Area of the state alleged that Senator Ajibola could not point to any achievement in his 12years as a senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District.
The PDP standard-bearer declared that he was ready to confront the APC sitting Governor Ahmed with proofs of his contributions to capital projects and development of communities and the people of Kwara State generally.
Ajibola maintained that truth of his N1.5 billion contribution to the construction of Ilorin Cargo Terminal, International Vocational Centre, Ajasse-po and Baruteen roads was best thrashed at the public domain.
He said evidence of payments, like cheques to whom, at what time and for what project would be made available to members of the public to judge.
He insisted that he had done more for Kwara people than Ahmed’s APC-led government given that as lawmaker, he did not control state funds like the governor.
Ajibola said he was instrumental to the creation of two additional local governments out of the defunct Irepodun and Ekiti local government areas as a member of the1995 Constitutional Conference.
According to him, Oke- Ero was carved out of Ekiti Local Government Area, while Isin was created from Irepodun Local Government Area in the Kwara South Senatorial District constituting his constituency.
Ajibola said state government’s failure to provide basic infrastructure informed many of his contributions and interventions in community self-help projects, in order to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
He said it was disheartening that social infrastructure and all what could make life better for the people had collapsed under the APC-led government in Kwara.
Ajibola lamented emasculation of the Local Government Councils by the state government in the guise of Joint Account system.
“I challenge Governor Ahmed to point to any project executed by the state with over N3 billion so far deducted by his administration from local government accounts in the last four years,” Ajibola added.
