Alhaji Sikiru Olawale Ajila, FINQS, has taken a moment to reflect on his remarkable life journey and professional accomplishments in a candid interview with CEOAFRICA via zoom, as he prepares to celebrate his 60th birthday and retirement.
Born on August 25, 1965, in the historic city of Ibadan, Oyo State, Ajila has built a prestigious career as a quantity surveyor and philanthropist, contributing significantly to the construction industry and community development.
In the interview, Ajila shared, "My name is Olawale Sikiru Ajila, a quantity surveyor by profession. I attended St. Peters Catholic School, Oke Are, in Ibadan, and then proceeded to Igbo Elerin Grammar School for my secondary education. After that, I furthered my studies at The Polytechnic of Ibadan and subsequently graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University, where I studied Quantity Surveying."
Following his graduation, Ajila embarked on his professional journey with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He recalled, "Initially, I was posted to Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) in Delta, where I was in charge of maintenance and preparation of contract documents. I standardized processes, which led my supervisors to recognize my diligence. They recommended that I be retained after my service."
Ajilas journey took a significant turn in 2003 when a presidential directive mandated the conversion of contract staff at NNPC to permanent positions or their layoff. Out of 5,000 contract staff, a challenging examination led to the recruitment of only 435. Ajila succeeded in this exam and joined the Engineering and Technology Division (ETD) in Abuja in June 2004, where he was the youngest member. He benefited from the mentorship of seasoned professionals like Mr. Stephen Idabor, Mr. Julius Okedairo, and Mr. Adebayo, who guided him through the complexities of the role.
During his tenure in ETD, Ajila was involved in numerous successful projects, including the construction of the Pollution Control Center in Masinmi, the NNPC Lecture Hall for training purposes in Masinmi, and the rehabilitation of the Okirika Jetty Project. His leadership abilities shone when he was appointed Project Manager for significant projects, including the NPDC Head Office in Benin City, considered a landmark achievement. He expressed pride in being part of the team that successfully reduced the cost estimates for the LNG Head Office in Port Harcourt, resulting in a citation for outstanding performance.
Reflecting on his career, Ajila stated, As a quantity surveyor, our role is akin to that of an accountant for any project. We navigate the challenges with wisdom, ensuring that we adhere to established procedures and maintain professional integrity. NNPCs structured environment allowed me to thrive, and I am grateful for the training and support provided by the management.
Ajila took the opportunity to acknowledge those who have profoundly impacted his life and career: For anyone to rise in life, you need mentorship. Nature has been good to me to meet people that mentored me right from primary school, and I would like to recognize some of the individuals who made remarkable contributions.
I start with my parents; my late father, Ishola Ajilabiowu, and my mother, who stood strong for me after my father passed. Also, my wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibiwunmi Moriliat Ajila, my friend and partner, has been a great support throughout our journey together. Im fortunate to have her in my life.
He expressed his gratitude to Barr. Kayode Agboola, a pastor and lawyer based in Lagos, who mentored him during primary school, and Dr. Sikiri Adebayo, a consultant at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. Ajila also thanked Engr. Sunday Gbenjo, Barr. Kolawole Esan (SAN), and his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Adepeju Esan, who have positively influenced his marriage. He paid tribute to his bosses, including Engr. Ozobua and Alhaji Salisu Sambo, along with Architect Ekereke, who provided invaluable guidance and support throughout his career.
Additionally, Ajila recognized QS Julius Okedairo, an experienced quantity surveyor, and Engr. Rasheed Ojulari, the Chief Innovation Officer at NNPC, as key figures in his professional journey. He expressed appreciation for Mr. Fenibo Okunsuju, the Managing Director of NNPC Pension, and Mr. Ayuba Ashu, who has been a mentor since 1993. "There are others I cant fully remember now, but I know that God will reward all of you for the impact you made in my life and career. I'm grateful to my friends and family, who have contributed to what I am today. I will forever be thankful for the paths our lives have crossed."
As he looks forward, Ajila states, "We will continue to serve humanity until we die. The impact we make on people's lives is crucial. Great individuals in our society are remembered for the positive difference they made, even long after they're gone. Whenever you have the chance to help someone, please do it. There's often no second chance. Every time you bring a smile to someone's face, God rewards it.
Finally, he shares his aspirations for the future: I plan to venture into small-scale business opportunities, particularly in property development, while continuing to practice quantity surveying. I find joy in my profession, and I want to advise young people, exercise more and stay close to God. As NNPC transitions from a Corporation to a Limited Liability Company, I believe in its vision to become the oil and gas pride of Africa. In the next 10 years, Im confident NNPC will be a major player on the global stage.
