Pharm. Uchenna Uzoma Apakama, Chairman of the Board of Fellows (BOF) of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, addressed the media to discuss the upcoming 7th Annual Public Lecture focused on mental health in Nigeria. Scheduled for July 2, 2025, at The Festival Hotel, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos, the lecture aims to shed light on the critical state of mental health, themed "Mental Health: A Basic Human Right Crucial to Personal, Community and Socio-Economic Development."

Welcoming attendees, Pharm. Apakama stated, “The Board of Fellows (BOF) is a prestigious body within the PSN, comprising esteemed pharmacists dedicated to advancing pharmacy practice. Our 2025 Mid-Year meeting, which incorporates the Annual Public Lecture, is dedicated to discussing pressing mental health issues in Nigeria.”

Highlighting the pervasive nature of mental health conditions across Nigeria, he noted that approximately 40 million Nigerians, representing 20% of the population, are affected by mental illnesses. “One in four Nigerians experiences mental issues at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, our country faces a significant mental health crisis, with fewer than 250 psychiatrists available to assist a population of over 200 million, translating to a staggering ratio of one psychiatrist per million people,” he added.

Pharm. Apakama emphasized the crucial role of pharmacists in mental health care, stating, “With their expert advice and medication management, pharmacists can lead individuals with mental health conditions toward healthier, more productive lives.” He outlined key points for discussion during the public lecture, including the current state of mental health in Nigeria, the issues surrounding drug and substance abuse, and effective strategies for promoting mental health awareness.

An array of esteemed speakers, including Dr. Gbonjubola Babalola Abiri, a renowned mental health expert, along with panelists Dr. Lucas B. Kayejo and Commander Abubakar Liman Wali, will lend their insights on these critical topics. Present at the press briefing were key members of the organization, including Pharm. Iyiola Gbolagade (Chairman LOC), Pharm. Gbenga Falabi (Chairman CPC), Pharm. Funmi Peters (Member CPC), Pharm. Dr. Rametu Momodu (Vice Chairman BOF), Pharm. Damian Izuka (Secretary BOF), Pharm. Margaret Obono (Financial Secretary BOF), and Pharm. Ike Ugwu (Member CPC).

In closing, Pharm. Apakama issued a call to action: “We urge governments at all levels and the general public to support mental health initiatives, prioritize self-care, promote the establishment of treatment centers, and commit to research. The outcome of our efforts will invigorate our ongoing flagship project, The Campaign Against Drug and Substance Abuse, while also appealing for increased support toward our BOF-Endowment Fund for the promotion of excellence in pharmaceutical education, research, and development.”

The press briefing underscored the BOF-PSN's dedication to promoting excellence in pharmacy practice and its commitment to addressing Nigeria's mental health crisis. As the 7th Annual Public Lecture approaches in five days, all stakeholders are encouraged to engage in discussions to further promote mental health awareness and care.
