Update: UK death toll reaches 40,542 and New Zealand lifts restrictions as it is declared Covid-free

The UK’s death toll from coronavirus now stands at 40,542 after another 204 deaths from Covid-19 were confirmed on Sunday.

NHS England recorded 75 deaths in hospitals, while across all settings, Wales announced 10 deaths, Scotland six and Northern Ireland one – meaning 112 of the deaths were likely to have happened in care homes and the wider community.

Meanwhile, New Zealand has eradicated coronavirus from its shores after its final Covid-19 patient recovered. From midnight, all forms of public events will be allowed to take place again without any limitations or social distancing guidelines.

 However people arriving in the country will still have to spend 14 days in quarantine under Government orders.
