Just In: Kidnapped Enugu monarch, wife regained freedom

The traditional ruler of Obom-Agbogugu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Sunday Orji and his wife, who were kidnapped on Sunday by unidentified gunmen have regained their freedom.

The police confirmed the release of the Igwe and his wife on Wednesday.

Recall that Igwe Orji was kidnapped with his wife at Ogbaku along Enugu-Port-Harcourt expressway while they were returning from a Thanksgiving Mass organised by the Bishop of Awgu Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Ifeanyi Okoye for his aged mother, Ezinne Ekedimma Okoye, held at St. John’s Pro Cathedral Church, Owelli Awgu on Sunday around 5:00 p.m.

However, on Monday the abductors reportedly contacted the royal family, demanding a N50 million ransom.

It was not clear if a ransom was paid for the release of the monarch and his wife as of the time of filing this report.

The state Public Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the release when contacted on the telephone said, “Yes, the traditional ruler and his wife have been released and we thank God for that”.

Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police said no arrest had been made but the operatives were still trailing the kidnappers and would be arrested.

He could not confirm whether ransom was paid for their release.
