President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt has stressed the importance of Sudan's stability and security to the chairman of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) Thabo Mbeki during a meeting in Cairo.

In an official statement, Egyptian presidency spokesman Bassam Rady said that El-Sisi discussed Egyptian efforts to support Sudan, especially through a consultation summit hosted by Cairo for Sudan's regional partners last April.

The summit aimed to bolster regional consultation and determine the grounds for clear understanding from the regional parties with a stake in the developments in the country.

Sudan has been witnessing instability after the ouster last month of longtime ruler Omar Al-Bashir.

El-Sisi also discussed providing aid to Sudan to help the country complete its transitional phase successfully and fulfil the legitimate aspirations of the Sudanese people.

Mbeki, a former president of South Africa, hailed Egypt's significant role in ensuring peace and security in Africa, especially during its current presidency of the African Union, Rady added.

Mbeki said that Egypt assumed the AU chairmanship during a critical period in the bloc's history, highlighting the key role Egypt plays in supporting cooperation within Africa.
