The oil and gas industry has transformed the economy of Equatorial Guinea, a small Central African country with a population of less than 1m people. Since the discovery of oil, Equatorial Guinea has transformed itself from a mainly agricultural economy into one of the largest crude oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa.

Infrastructure

Guinea is richly endowed with natural resources, especially minerals. Guinea possesses over 25 billion metric tons of bauxite, which is believed to be up to one half of the world’s reserves. Guinea also boasts of over 4 billion tons of high-grade iron ore, significant gold and diamond reserves, and yet to be determined amounts of uranium and prospective oil reserves. There is a great opportunity for investment in infrastructure to extract most of these resources.

Mining

With the abundance in natural resources, there are enormous opportunities in the mining sector. Bauxite mining and alumina production provide about 80% of Guinea';s foreign exchange.

Agriculture

Guinea also has considerable potential for growth in the agricultural and fishing sectors. Land, water, and climatic conditions provide opportunities for large-scale irrigation farming and agro industry. Possibilities for investment and commercial activities exist in all these areas. There are valuable investment opportunities in coffee production and export, poultry farming and processing and establishment of feed mill.

Communications

The underdevelopment of the country';s telecommunications sector is a big opportunity for potential investors to take action on. Radio is the most important source of information for the public in Guinea, and the only one to reach the entire country.

There is a single government-owned radio network, a growing number of private radio stations, and one government TV station. A massive gap needs to be filled in the fixed telephone system, with just 18,000 lines to serve the country';s 10.5 million inhabitants in 2012. The mobile cellular system continue to grow but can still make use of more investment. Internet usage is very low, reaching just 1.5% of the population in 2012.

Energy

Guinea energy sector is built on three primary energy sources - biomass, oil and hydropower. With 78%, biomass (mostly charcoal) makes the largest contribution in primary energy consumption in Guinea. It is locally produced, while Guinea imports all petroleum products.

Forestry

The vegetation presents opportunities for investment in forestry. Such areas like timber management/production and export, building materials and furniture production, rubber production hold considerable returns on investment.
