Two persons were feared dead yesterday when a storey building under construction collapsed at Obafemi Awolowo Way by Asuquo J. Okon intersection in Jabi, Abuja. Six others were rescued from the rubble around 2:30pm.

There were conflicting reports on the number of people trapped at press time as workers nearby said they were 11, while other witnesses said 25.

A mechanic close to the scene, Majid Abdul stated that the building had been abandoned for a long time before construction resumed recently.

Many rescue organisations including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Red Cross, Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) as well as the police, civil defense and VIO had a tough time controlling human and vehicular traffic around the area.

Our reporters observed that officials of the Nigerian Building & Road Research Institute (NBRRI) were seen taking samples of materials of the collapsed building, including iron rods and cement.
