The Legislative functions of the Rivers State House have on Thursday been confiscated by the National Assembly following the Senate resolution passed. CEOAFRICA new correspondent gathered from the the utterances of Senator Eninnaya Abaribe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media that the principal officers of the National Assembly would meet later to determine procedures by which the Rivers Assembly would be run, stating that the activities of the Rivers state House of assembly has been put on the hold. This decision was however reached following the report put forward by the Senate Committee on State and Local government which investigated the crisis in the Assembly and in accordance with the provisions of section 11(4) of the 199 Constitution (as amended) pending the resolution of the crisis and restoration of peace in Rivers State. The Senators also resolved that the Inspector-General of Police should as a matter of urgency, redeploy the state’s Commission of Police, Mr. Joseph, since his relationship with Governor Amaechi had gone sour. It was also resolved in the Senate that the Senate President should intervene and mediate in the Rivers State Political crisis and see to its amicable resolution. The Committee in its findings also observed that the crisis in the Assembly on July 9, 2013 was the manifestation of deep-rooted political crisis occasioned by the alleged highhandedness of Governor Amaechi and the perceived undue interference with the political and security structure of the state by the President, his wife and the national leadership of the PDP. President of the Senate, David Mark however, remarked that the Senate remained neutral in its efforts to give a lasting solution to the problem.
