Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has sealed the electronic section of Alaba International Market, citing poor waste management in the market, non payment of waste bills among other infractions.

Addressing a joint press conference on the issue on Monday, Chief Camilus Amajuoyi, President Alaba Intl Market, Electronics Section, Hon Mbonu Udechukwu, Hon Umeh Mark Anthony, Coordinator General Amalgamated Alaba Intl Market, all maintained that they were embarrassed when they got to the market on Monday morning only to discover that their well maintained market, electronic section has been sealed by officials of LAWMA without prior notice to them of any infractions.

Chief Amajuoyi said he has met his executives and so demand from the management of LAWMA to immediately re- open the market. He posited that the contact for waste removal with various PSP organizations, all approved by LAWMA are still effective; as they visit the market thrice every week to evacuate refuse generated within the market. Also, the market has a functional environmental sanitation section that ensures that every shop has a waste basket bin which are usually emptied once the waste disposal truck arrives as the market does not have a functional refuse dump site.

Explaining further, Chief Amajuoyi said they do not have outstanding bills with LAWMA as their bills are paid promptly. He equally mentioned that Alaba Intl Market Electronics Section was awarded the cleanest market by LAWMA in 2021.

Of great significance is the fact that the entire market ground is covered by interlocking blocks while the drainages are covered.

Finally, he requested that the market be re-opened immediately.
