President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated the Falconets in Abuja

Jonathan believed that the Falconets had shown the world that with their skills, strength and determination; they could remain a global force in women’s football for years to come.

Nigeria lost to their Germany 0-1 in an extra time in the keenly contested final, which ended at about 2:45 a.m. Nigerian time on Monday.

The statement stated that despite the loss, Jonathan assured the team that “all Nigerians remain proud of the skillful, highly spirited and patriotic performance they put up throughout the tournament’’.

It stated that the president looked forward to honouring the team with a reception at the Presidential Villa on their return from Canada.

“The girls outplayed the Germans for long periods in the final and also had greater ball possession and a higher number of goal attempts.

“Jonathan stayed awake till 03:00 hours (local time in Germany) to watch the match with his aides as he promised the girls during his chat with the team on Saturday.

“The president assures the Falconets and their trainers that they will continue to receive all the support and encouragement they require from the Federal Government to fully actualise their world-beating potential.’’ (NAN)
