Most. Rev. Dr Gabriel Ojeleke Abegunrin
The Archbishop of Catholic Archdiocese Most. Rev. Dr Gabriel Ojeleke Abegunrin at a media chat with gentlemen of the press at St Joseph Catholic Church Oke-Ado, Ibadan, on the returns of schools back to mission and private owners said "the Catholic Church has been agitating for this. When you make a request, you must be sensitive to the listening hear of the person you are making your request to, you must be conscious of the personality you are addressing and the need of the society. In Nigeria, all Christian mission want back their schools but the problem we have with the return of schools is that when government give back the school the condition of most of the schools would have worsen and not all of them would be ready to give money to repair the schools unless few like the former governor of Anambra state. When governor peter obi gave back schools to missions, he gave some money for its repairs and to run the school, he had to get back our original land that has been encroached upon by residents he ordered that such buildings be bulldozed. I went there and saw it. i know that if schools are given to missions, morality and fear of God will return to our system.
On chibok girls, his grace said he was surprised that 236 girls was been whisked away and no staff of the school could even challenge members of the dreaded sect. If the principal had challenged the abductors, it would have been better for her to be killed and be remembered as a martyr of our time. All hand should be on deck to get the girls, when the girls get back the principal should be made to answer some questions.
On the economy of the nation, his grace said that there are so many contradictory statements from our economy citing the story of NNPC going broke and looking for where to borrow money and some good amount of money missing from the same NNPC account you can see many contradiction and you cannot know when they are telling the truth or not. The Nigerian economy is not supposed to be at this low ebb if government and its officials don’t steal money.
His grace supported the idea of government taking its hands off sponsoring of pilgrimage. When i was at osogbo, Bishop fagbemi(rtd.) who was the CAN chairman clamoured for this and down to the time when i took over, we were strongly in support of government taking its hand off sponsoring pilgrimage, we were of the view that government should provide those who would guide them security and Medicare to the pilgrims. From what we have heard from people the money moves from hand to hand and what gets to the individual is not what government actually budgets. It’s another way to encourage people to cheat.
The archbishops commented on the problem in Osun state as regards mergers of school. He said the church will not support any violence and that they are in communication with the governor to resolve the issue. That the first time he met with the governor, he advised him that great men in life for the sake of their people do bend back so i have advised him to bend a little for the sake of the Osun people. I allowed him to know that its not a sign of timidity but its a sign to win back the love of the people
