NIGERIA (Nasarawa)- Ahead of the Local Government Election coming up in Nasarawa State on Saturday, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed 5, 575 personnel to provide security for voters that day.

The NSCDC Commandant, Mr Amos Andekin, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lafia on Thursday that the deployment was to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.

He said the command was working in collaboration with other agencies to monitor and ensure violence-free elections.

Meanwhile, a joint Security Committee comprising the Police, Civil Defence, DSS and other security agencies had expressed their readiness to ensure security of lives and property before, during and after the elections.

The Commissioner of Police, Idris Ibrahim, made this known when he briefed newsmen on Thursday.

Ibrahim said there would be restriction of movement from 12 midnight on Friday to last through the duration of the elections.

He said genuine travelers passing through the state along the Federal highways, officers on essential services as well as electoral officials were exempted from the restriction.

Ibrahim said markets, shops and all business premises would remain closed during the period, and advised members of the public to make adequate provision for their needs to avoid unnecessary inconveniences.

He said the movement of individuals, especially public officeholders from one polling unit to another was a contravention of the Electoral Act and would not be tolerated.

“Personnel of security agencies will be deployed in all polling units and at the strategic locations to ensure an enabling environment for a crises-free election,” Ibrahim added.

He said the security committee had made available dedicated telephone lines, 07059473022 and 08123825171, for prompt report of any incidence that might arise during the elections.

According to him, three operational centres have been opened in Lafia, Akwanga and Keffi, where security personnel will be permanently stationed to receive calls from the dedicated lines.
