Ahead of this year's World Down Syndrome Day coming up on Friday, March 21, 2014,the wife of the Executive Governor of Oyo state, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, has called onstakeholders in the health sector and well meaning individuals to focus on giving people with Down Syndrome access to quality healthcare without any form of discrimination

Mrs Ajimobi also advocated that people should give more awareness to Down Syndrome as a condition to let people know what it is and how they can relate with people that have this condition to aid them in contributing their quota as individuals to the society

In a statement signed by Mrs Ajimobi's Special Assistant on Media, Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare, made available on Tuesday, Mrs Ajimobi stated that Down Syndrome is not a death sentence and does not mean that individuals with the condition are useless to the society.

She stated further that people living with Down Syndrome have rights like every other individual to access healthcare when required and on an equal basis with others without discrimination, adding that there is also the need for proper assessment of the specific needs of each individual

According to her, Down Syndrome is not a genetic condition nor an illness and so should not cause stigmatisation though people with this condition may have health issues often throughout their lives like everyone else

"Healthcare for people with Down Syndrome condition should be very accessible and it should be on equal basis with others without such conditions."

She also called on people not to discriminate against anyone with Down Syndrome and called on health practitioners not to refuse them treatment or blame health issues on their condition without proper assessment
