The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack and prosecute all corrupt public officers in his government to serve as deterrence to others.

ASUU National President, Dr Nasir Fagge while speaking in an interview with newsmen after a symposium organised by the Education Rights Campaign group held at the University of Ibadan, called for a review of the immunity clause which protects corrupt people in power from prosecution.

The ASUU boss noted that covering up of the crimes of the powerful is inimical to growth and development of the country. He said the law was against the masses who are daily suffering from the consequences of unchecked stealing and pilfering of the collective wealth of the nation.

Fagge who said the present leadership cannot be trusted tasked Nigerians to mobilise and collectively demand accountability from government at all levels. He expressed worries over scandals happening in the corridors of power in Nigeria.

According to him, Nigerians must demand accountability from those at the helms of affairs. ASUU president said in normal and sane climes, heads ought to roll anytime there was scandal but alleged they are covered up while those doing the right thing "either loose their jobs or head".

Fagge said corruption has become endemic hampering growth and development in the country with no serious effort made to curtail it. He noted that corruption scandals was a tell-tale sign that Nigeria is a sick society where leaders are suffering from serious slave mentality. Fagge who noted that those running Nigeria are interested in personal gains rather than development of the country, said the law which protects leaders from been prosecuted for stealing public money during their reign is anti-masses.

On the increment of fees in LASU, ASUU boss vowed to frustrate the hike in tuition fee at the Lagos State University (LASU) which it said is capable of denying students access to public education.  Nasir who was reacting to the plea by a group of students from the university asking ASUU to intervene, Dr Fagge informed the students that ASUU has set up committee to meet with Governor Raji Fashola and the Management of LASU.

The ASUU boss who noted that Universities were not commercial centres for Internally Generated Revenues but knowledge production centres added that moves to hike tuition fee will not take care of problems in LASU but deny children of the masses access to public education.

According to him, the fee introduction would have taken place earlier than now but halted by the intervention of ASUU through a delegation led by Dr Dipo Fashina. While saying the union will not support hike in fees in any public universities in Nigeria, Dr Fagge said ASUU's final action will be determined by the outcome of the meeting of delegates sent to meet the Visitor and Vice Chancellor of LASU.
