THE SENATE COMMITTEE REVIEWS THE CONSTITUTION

The long-awaited voting on recommendations of the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution has finally taken place yesterday with the parliament altering some section of the constitution.

Among the recommendation acknowledged are; Disapproval of the recommendation of autonomy for local governments, Disapproval of separation of office of the Attorney General of the Federation from that of the Minister of Justice, Adoption of the bill which empowers the National Assembly to make entirely new constitution for the country, Disapproval of six-year single term for the President and governors, Deletion from the constitution of the section which put limit to women marriage, Adoption of the recommendation that amended constitution must not wait for the president’s assent before taking effect etc.

In addition to the above list, it also approved the recommendation that a bill automatically becomes law if the president fails to assent to it after 30 days of its transmission, and rejected a recommendation barring a deputy governor or vice-president, who succeeds his boss on account of death from standing for election after serving out the tenure of his or her boss.
