The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN in Ekiti State has expressed concerns about the mayhem and bloodbath which characterized the selection process of a governorship candidate by the People’s Democratic Party in the state on Tuesday July 16, 2013, warning that the party should not shatter the fragile peace reigning in the state with their uncivilized behavior.

In a statement issued by the Director of Publicity of ACN in the state, Segun Dipe, the ACN said it was worried about the fracas which erupted at the PDP secretariat in Ado-Ekiti while the party was trying to select a candidate that will represent it during the 2014 governorship election in the state.

ACN recalled that some members of the state executive of the opposition party PDP threw caution to the wind on Tuesday July 16, 2013, when they embarked on their usual show of shame in their futile attempt to select a candidate for the coming election.

Segun Dipe said that they did not only fight among themselves but also shot at and beat up innocent citizens, including journalists who were carrying out their legitimate duty.

The party said that the most embarrassing sight to us however was that of Rt Hon. Kola Adefemi, former Speaker of Ekiti State House Assembly between 1999 and 2003, who is currently the legal adviser of the troubled PDP, was drenched with blood as a result of injury sustained from the mayhem.

ACN said that the PDP leopard cannot change its skin adding that the party is known for violence and disorderliness nationwide and in Ekiti especially, where it has proved on several occasions that it cannot conduct any of its activities in an orderly manner.

We want Nigerians to also recall that the same Party disrupted the peace in the state last year, during the Party’s state Congress at the same venue. Then, the former Deputy Speaker of the EKHA, Hon Taiwo Olatunbosun and other top officials were hospitalized due to injuries sustained at the Party secretariat when cudgels, axes and other dangerous weapons were unleashed on themselves and other innocent members of the public.

We condemn these dastardly acts and call on the law enforcement agencies in the state to investigate Tuesday’s fracas by the PDP and deal decisively with those found culpable without being mindful of their status, since no one should be above the law. We also want the law enforcement agencies to keep an eye on all PDP activities in the state, since it is now apparent that the party is the main cause of disorder and crisis in the state.

Such mayhem and bloodbath as being caused by PDP in the state is no more an acceptable standard, especially with the administration of Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, which has worked so hard to restore peace and order in the state hitherto thrown into violence during the seven and half years of PDP misrule.

We recall that Ekiti was rated the most-peaceful state in Nigeria between 1999 and 2003 during the Otunba Niyi Adebayo regime only for it to regress to a violent state which earned it a state of emergency in the seven and half harrowing years under PDP.

We are not surprised that PDP is finding it difficult to select a candidate among its array of aspirants numbering about 23 as at the last count. A party with no idea of how to guide a state to development in this 21st century except through shooting, maiming and killing has no business canvassing for votes.

We find it curious though that PDP in the state wants to canvass for votes from the peaceful and politically conscious people of Ekiti whose eyes have opened wide and can now differentiate between good and evil. They are inflicting injuries and pains on the people they want to govern.
