Godwin Obaseki
The leadership of Accord Party on Sunday called on Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the September 10 poll, to ensure that his explanation on his role in the alleged N5.5 billion deals involving real estate development, a company where he holds a substantial share, is convincing enough.
Obaseki had denied having a case with the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
Speaking with journalists in Benin, Obaseki said “I don’t have a case with EFCC. I read the story and, as you know, I am in the board of several companies and this company in question is a German company and I served on their board and they had a partner who died many years ago and unfortunately, his estate has not been properly managed, his other businesses have gone bankrupt and there is a petition from the children claiming that this company was owing their father.
“But you will see it online, the agreement this company had with the children several years ago where what was due to the estate was paid, we have been seeing it in the papers; it is a family having quarrels and all sorts of internal issues. So, they wrote to EFCC and other bodies and if somebody is owing you money are there no courts to go, is it not a civil matter.
“But I didn’t manage the company, I was just a shareholder, so I don’t have anything there but you know being in politics you expect everything,” Obaseki said
But Accord Party, in a statement in Benin stated that “our inquiry followed a petition on the floor of the lower chamber seeking investigation into the APC candidate’s role in the scenario.
The statement which was signed by Dr. Samson Isibor, the National Secretary of AP, stated that Mr. Obaseki’s explanation was shallow and admonished the APC candidate to be explicit enough so as to come out clean himself.
“We in the Accord Party called on the APC candidate to clear himself of the alleged criminal offence before embarking on campaigns as the allegation is too weighty.
”We are very sceptical on the issue because Edo people are wiser now and will never make the mistake of voting for a person involved in this type of matter without being cleared of the allegation, haven suffered enough in the past,” he said.
