A group, the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), has slammed the Federal Government over the appointment of Idris Ibrahim as the new Inspector General of Police.

The group said President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointments, so far, were lopsided.

It wondered why over 90 per cent of security and service chiefs are from the northern part of the country.

The group warned the president to stop jettisoning equity and fairness, which it said, were keys to the development of any egalitarian nation.

National coordinator of the group, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, who gave the verdict in a statement made available to Tribune Online on Wednesday, in Warri, Delta State, said the group hoped the IGP’s appointment was in accordance with the Police Acts, which recognised seniority of ranks in such appointment.

It warned that appointing northerners alone to secure the country would not augur well in the overall safety of people, especially in the southern part of the country, stressing the menace of Fulani herdsmen to buttress its claims.

"Security is key to the sustainable development of the nation. And if you follow the appointments of service chiefs, you will notice that 90 per cent are from the north.

"Most of the appointments are lopsided. If Nigerians begin to perceive the APC as trying to appoint only people from the North, it would pose a grave danger for the nation.

"The President should be careful and ensure that this appointment is in line with the Police Acts," it warned.

Meanwhile, the Centre has urged the new IGP to bring his wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of his duty and stem the waves of insurgency and pockets of conflicts in some parts of the country.

Besides, it advised him to introduce a sweeping reform in the police force with a view to making it more proactive in combating crimes and other social vices in the country.
