A mentally derailed woman popularly called Victoria was found dead in
the early hours of yesterday at Ajibode Area, University of Ibadan Extension,
Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Victoria, who has been wandering around the area for quite some time, was
found lifeless by residents of the area behind a Health Centre at Ajibode.

Speaking to our *Ceoafrica*, Brother Rosario Ojo Adeola, a Welfare Officer
at the Eternal Father House of Divine Mercy, an organisation for the
abandoned and destitute in the society, stated that at about 5:00pm
on Tuesday, he got a call from the Catholic Archbishop of Oyo
Diocese, Bishop Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, mandating him to go check out
the abandoned mentally derailed woman he saw on various social media
platforms to be lying helpless at Ajibode.

The Welfare Officer revealed that on getting to the scene, he saw the woman
lying critically ill and unclothed behind the primary health centre at
Ajibode, adding that he went into the clinic to challenge the health
workers on why they left her unattended to.

He reinstated that he was shocked at the response he got from one of the
nurses who said the clinic is primarily for pregnant women and children,
so, nothing can be done about her case. However, Mr Adeola immediately
contacted the Police DPO of Ojoo Police Station who gave an order asking
the clinic to offer first Aid treatment, which was not complied with by
the health workers.

Mr Adeola indicated that he clothed the mentally derailed woman, offered
her food and hoped that the primary health centre would have  attended to
her, adding that he was stunned to see her dead this morning

A resident of the Ajibode Area, who pleaded for anonymity, revealed that
Victoria has been staying in the area for over six years as she lived in a
refuse dump, stating that she recently moved behind the primary health
centre.

Another resident, Mr Taiwo Ogunmadeji, a student of the University of
Ibadan said that the mentally derailed woman has been wandering around
Ajibode for some years now adding that she moved away and recently came
back to the area in a deteriorated state.

Mr Taiwo stated that the primary health centre, Ajibode has been quite
beneficial to the residents of the community adding that they cannot be
blamed for Victoria’s Death.

He reiterated that the only concern he has with the maternity centre is
that, they should have informed the appropriate authorities about the
development.

Speaking during an interview, the Medical Officer in charge of Affairs for
Akinyele Local Government Area under which Ajibode falls, Dr. Olatunji
Babatunde, stated that he supervises every health facility within the local
government and that there was no case of abandonment and rejection as
regards the said woman.

Dr. Olatunji said that the mentally derailed woman was well known to the
health workers and members of the community as she goes about picking up
dirt, chasing after little children and sometimes being violent adding that
she wasn’t brought to the health centre by anybody but she sought dwelling
close the fence of the health centre

He however debunked the allegation that the health care centre abandoned
the mentally derailed woman based on the fact that she was HIV positive
stating that they were not aware of her status as nobody carried out a test
on her and that the health workers refused to take her in because they are
not empowered with the necessary health facilities and human resources to
cater for a psychiatric patient.

The medical supervisor also stated that the health workers did their best
by directing the emissaries sent by Archbishop to contact the appropriate
authorities on transferring to a secondary health care facility or teaching
hospital who they believe have the adequate facilities and personnel to
handle such cases.
