
Malaria: State govts, private sector tasked on subsidized treatment

The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) has urged state governments, philanthropists and companies to key into its programmes on funding the recommended malaria treatment drug, Artemisinin based Combination Therapy (ACT).
National Coordinator of the programme, Dr Nnenna Ezeigwe, who made the call at the weekend in Abuja, said such support would make the treatment affordable and accessible for the populace.

Represented by the Director and Head of Programme Management, NMEP, Dr Audu Mohammed, at an interactive session she called on the public to insist on paying only N200 for adult dose of 24 tablets ACT.
She advised healthcare providers to desist from prescribing or recommending monotherapies like chloroquine and that they should encourage their patients to complete the full dose of ACT.
Head Case Management Branch of the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr Godwin Ntadom said presumptive treatment with anti-malarial medicines was no longer fashionable across the globe as this only promote wastage, especially now where malaria positivity is less than 20 per cent in most urban settings.
