
The Delta State House of Assembly, on Thursday suspended the council boss of Ndokwa East Local Government Area; Mrs. Nkechi Chukwura for three months with immediate effect and in her place empowered the vice chairman of the council to take over as the acting chairman within the period.
The resolution of the House was based on the impeachment notice issued against the council chairman and forwarded to the House by 12 councilors out of 15 members of the legislative arm of the council in line with section 31 of the Delta State Local Government Law, 2013 as amended.
The impeachment notice which was sequel to a motion of matters of urgent public importance was moved by the member representing Ndokwa West Constituency, Mr. Azuka Azaka and seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr. Festus Okoh, representing Ika South Constituency, Mr. Azuka who is the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, said the suspension of the chairman would ensure the maintenance of peace and order in the local government and allow the House Committee of local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to carry out a thorough investigation into the issues.
“Mr. Speaker sequel to the impeachment notice forwarded to this House by 12 councilors out of 15 councilors of Ndokwa East Legislative Arm against Mrs. Nkechi Chukwura, the chairman Ndokwa East Local Government Council, in line with section 31 of the Delta state Local Government Law, 2013 as amended, I moved that this honourable house suspend, Mrs. Nkechi Chukwura, the Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government Council for a period of three months with immediate effect, while the vice chairman take over as the acting chairman of the council,” Mr. Azuka moved.
The House presided over by the Speaker Mr. Monday Igbuya passed the resolution of the House as requested for by the motion moved by Mr. Azuka Azaka.
It would be recalled that 12 out of the 15 councilors of the council came to the premises of the Assembly complex on Wednesday to issue the impeachment notice against the embattled council chairman, Mrs. Chukwura.
On receiving the impeachment notice, the chairman, House committee on Local immediately convened an emergency sitting of the committee where both parties, including the chairman of the council was allowed to defend herself.
The councillors in the meeting accused the chairman of gross misappropriation of funds, alleging that they sit on plastic chairs during sitting, while the chairman is renovating her office with N14 million.
