FG approves 14 solar projects to generate 2,260 megawatts - Fashola

The Federal government, on Tuesday, announced the approval of 14 solar projects, which would generate about 2,260 megawatts, with a view to easing problems of epileptic power supply in the country.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Raji Babatunde Fashola announced this during a meeting with French Minister of Environment and Power, Mrs S. Royal at the Conference Room of the ministry in Abuja.

Mr Fashola, who received the French minister, alongside with his counterpart from the Ministry of Environment, Mrs Amina Mohammed, said financial agreement has already been approved, while every necessary step to fast track the projects would commence soon.

He, therefore, called for the establishment of more solar panel factors in Nigeria, saying assembling and manufacturing them here would reduce the cost.

While assuring the French minister of Nigerian government`s support, Mr Fashola said President Muhammadu Buhari led administration was committed to ensure stable power supply as a means of livelihood to many Nigerians.

Speaking on Lake Chad, the minister said it was one of the front burner issues for Buhari`s government as the president has continually explained that African continent must restore it, failure to which might lead to human consequence.

According to him, "Lake Chad is a front burner issue for the government, as President Buhari has continually explained that it is the interest of the Europe and the entire continent of Africa to ensure that we preserve, we renew and we restore Lake Chad for all the communities whose livelihood and sustenance depend on it."

Earlier, the French Minister, Mrs Royal called for collaboration between the two countries and the resuscitation of Lake Chad.
