A popular saying which says ‘Educate a girl and you educate a whole nation’ could be said to be the fulcrum of discussion at the 1st Daily Trust Women Summit/Exhibition and Presentation of the Woman of Power Magazine. The Event held yesterday at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel to commemorate the International Women’s Day for 2016.

The event organised by Daily Trust in partnership with Octlan & Mayfun called on government at all levels and stakeholders to make the education of the girl-child a priority. Panelists at the occasion were of the opinion that it is incumbent on any country that wants to progress to factor the role of women in national building.

In her keynote address at the event, the wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari called on world leaders to take a decisive action on the plight of women globally and entrench a culture that will promote gender balance in their countries. The President’s wife who was represented by the wife of the Governor of Zamfara State, Hajiya Asmau Abdulaziz Yari said the summit has provided the platform an urgent need to accelerate gender equality  across the globe.

The panelists which comprised of seasoned and tested professionals like the wife of the Kebbi State governor Dr Zainab Bagudu, Professor Hauwa Imam of the University of Abuja and Dr Salma Abassi, Dr Francis Ohanyido, Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli, Funke Opeke, Bunmi Oke of eWorldwide Group USA, NTD Nigeria, LEAP Africa, Main One Cables and 141 Worldwide respectively agreed that the factors militating against the growth and development of a girl child are multifaceted and should be tackled headlong.

They all agreed that religious, cultural, traditional and economic factors rather than a curse, should be a blessing to empower and give optimal education to a girl child to excel globally.
