Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has sacked his Special Assistant on Internal Revenue, Mr. Ropo Ogunjobi.
A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Modupe Alade, and aired on the state's radio station, made this known.
The statement said Ogunjobi was sacked for alleged "involvement in revenue racketeering."
The governor, also on Thursday, handed Ojo Omotayo and Akinniyi Akinsola over to the police following their arrest for forgery of government revenue receipts.
The suspects confessed that they printed the fake receipts with the civil servant admitting that he had expended 10 fake receipt booklets.
Governor Fayose told newsmen while handing over the suspects, that the state government launched an investigation following complaints from the public and the discovery by the government that despite all its efforts, the revenue profile of the state was still not really improving.
He said a large scale financial fraud has been uncovered at the Ekiti State Board of Internal Revenue Service, saying investigations revealed that perpetrators include some staff of the board who collaborate with outsiders to commit the crime.
Though the specific amount involved in the scam was not immediately known, insider sources said it could run into millions of Naira.
Ogunjobi, who also doubled as the chairman of the state's Internal Revenue Service, was relieved of his appointment on the orders of Governor Fayose.
While he was sacked for negligence, two other persons were handed over to the police.
According to the governor, the duo specialises in the printing of fake revenue receipts as well as engages in the issuing of fake tax clearance certificates to unsuspecting residents.
They were said to have printed and began putting to use a total of 10 packets of fake revenue receipts before nemesis caught up with them.
The governor warned people of the state to stop paying money directly to any government official but rather approach the banks for such payments.
Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner in the state, Mr Etom James who also confirmed the development said full scale investigations had commenced on the matter.
