Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and Senate President, Bukola Saraki
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo met with key leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday in what is thought to be aimed at resolving the crisis of confidence in the ruling party.
Among those present at the meeting presided over by the Vice President in his office include Senate President Bukola Saraki, National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; National Leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Lasun; Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babagana Babachir Lawal and former Interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande.
Others are Senate Leader, Mohammed Ali Ndume, APC National Vice Chairman (South West) Segun Oni; Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu; former National Chairman of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Chief Tony Momoh, among others.
The meeting, which started at about 11a.m was described as a "a consultative" meeting and closed to the media.
It took place while President Muhammadu Buhari was still away in the Middle East and Osinbajo is now expected to brief him on the outcome.
It would be the first time Atiku would be attending a political meeting in the Presidential Villa since the advent of this administration and his second time overall in the seat of power having recently attended Jumat prayers with the president.
The meeting ended at about 2.45pm with all participants who were approached by State House correspondents declining to speak.
However, it was gathered that what may have received the attention of the meeting apart from lack of trust among top members of the APC, is its on-going financial crisis which has been unable to attract the sympathy of both President Buhari and its normal sponsors.
However, Special Adviser (Political) in the Office of the Vice President, Senator Femi Ojudu, told reporters that the meeting was a routine consultative one.
He dismissed suggestions that it was meant to address the brewing crisis of confidence growing in national hierarchy of the APC.
In a two-paragraph statement issued later by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Laolu Akande, he said the meeting was useful and resourceful towards achieving the goals of the party and government.
It said: "Selected leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, drawn from the party’s National Headquarters, the legislative and executive arms of government had a consultative meeting on issues affecting the party and the nation.
"The meeting, which held at the Vice President’s conference room, was very useful and resourceful towards achieving the goals of the party and the government."
