Commonwealth Lauds Jonathan Leadership Quality

The secretary general of Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharman has lauded the leadership quality of the immediate past president Goodluck Jonathan.

The commonwealth made this known on Thursday, January 7, when Jonathan paid him a courtesy call at MarIborough House, the headquarters of the organization, The  Cable reports.

Sharman thanked the former president for his ‘able leadership’ as the head of Commonwealth Election Observer Group to Tanzania and equally, on his service the organization as its special representative in Zanzibar following the annulment of elections.

He equally praised Jonathan for his peaceful transition of power to a new government in Nigeria after the 2015 general elections.

The ex-president briefed the Commonwealth chief on the activities of the election observer group in Tanzania and express gratitude to the organization for supporting him with a team that proved their mettle and showed professionalism.

Jonathan stressed further he will always be available for future assignments describing the experience as a ‘great honour, both for him and for Nigeria.’

He lamented the continued uncertainty in Zanzibar following cancellation of the October 25 general election. He called on the leader of the country to put national interest and the people first, as they seek a sustainable and peaceful solution to the impasses in the ongoing national dialogue.

The ex-president noted that he would continue to take keen interest in the development in Zanzibar as its special representative.

Jonathan praised the effort of Commonwealth for promoting peaceful and credible elections globally, especially in Africa. He offered to work with organization in the promotion of democracy and good governance.
