HSN to host 60th conference in Abuja

The Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) will hold its 60th Annual Conference with the theme ‘The National Experience’ from October 11 to 14,2015 at the University of Abuja, Nigeria.

The event is expected to be attended by President Buhari and other top government officials, traditional rulers, political dignitaries and the executive council members of the association. Foreign nationals from more several European countries, the United States and other parts of the world are also expected to grace the conference.

While speaking with CEOAfrica, the President of the Association; Professor Chris Ogbogbo who is also the Head of the Department of History in the University of Ibadan, expressed optimism about the forthcoming 60th annual conference.

He maintained that history is essential for the advancement of any nation and also buttressed the need to teach history as a mandatory subject for primary and secondary school pupils to enable the younger generation develop a strong acquaintance with their cultural heritage, family, society and the country at large.

Professor Ogbogbo, while blaming the government for the lackadaisical attitude towards history as a subject, urged the public stakeholders in the education sector to incorporate history into the academic curriculum so as to “sustain the undiluted transition of our great historical antecedent to future generations.”

The Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) was founded in 1955 by late Professor Kenneth. O. Dike and Professor Abdulahi Smith who were past Heads of History Department, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. There are also other founding fathers whose names were not available as at press time.

The conference which is to hold in Abuja is opened to all and sundry for participation in order to rethink on our history as a people.  

The association was formed with the mission to promote an enduring sense of history and historical consciousness Nigeria and Africa as a continent.
