Two children of the same parents aged between 3 and five years were killed yesterday when a police Armour Personnel Carrier lost control and hit an electric pole which fell on children playing in front of their father’s house at Egbedi area in Ilesa-West LGA of Osun State.

This however triggered residents of the town and attempted to set the ‘A’ Division Police Station ablaze as a result of the incident after the driver escaped with the vehicle. The driver was said to have lost control and rammed the APC it into the pole which fell on the children while their father was away at the farm.

Residents of the area including commercial motorcycle operators who chased the driver failed to get him. The mob then descended on the police station at Ayeso and vandalized all operational vehicles and private cars, including other valuable property there. Policemen on duty however fired several tear-gas and gunshots into the air to disperse them.

The father of the kids after returning from the farm could not stand the incident has he started wailing and could not be consoled. He demanded the remains of his children but they were not released to him. He pleaded with Governor Rauf Aregbesola and other well-meaning Nigerians to intervene.

Police spokesman, Mrs Folasade Odoro, confirmed the incident, saying the police driver had been detained. Odoro advised residents of Ilesa to remain calm and assured that the matter would be investigated diligently and dispassionately. She expressed the command’s sympathy to parents of the children.
