The President General of Igbo community in Gombe State, Chief Kenneth Okeugo, has called on the Federal Government to consider the Igbos in plans to rebuild, resettle, and give soft loans to the people of the northeast affected by the Boko Haram insurgence.
Okeugo made the appeal against the backdrop of renewed calls by stakeholders and the states in the sub region, to establish a commission to address the destruction of lives, community and properties as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in the region since 2009.
"Please let's spare a thought for the ndigbos that are residing in the northeast, which have also been affected.
"Statistics show that apart from the indigenous ethnic groups in these areas, Igbos are the next in terms of population.
"The Igbos are dominant in some areas where they are more in number than some tribes. Igbos investment in some of these areas in the region is only second to government. Now that government's agencies and some non-governmental rganisations are making plans on post insurgency in the Northeast, nobody is taking account of Igbos in these areas.
"Records show that igbos are among the people that suffered most under the Boko Haram activities. We lost loved ones, businesses, factories and homes.
"Displaced by the crises, most igbos are scattered all over the country today begging for food. Many more are trying to start a living all over again with help not coming from any quarters. And because of the nature of the Igbos, they are not found in the IDP camps. But the truth is that some of the people in these camps are not from the affected communities.
"My plea to the powers that be is: please, don't forget ndigbos from the Northeast who suffered because of the onslaught of the insurgents in the area," he said.
