Wife of the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Buhari
Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, miffed by the appointment of a man to head the Women Affair ministry in Adamawa, yesterday, raised concerns of women group in Adamawa state to the state government’s curious appointment.
Aliyu Tola was appointed by the governor to head the Ministry of Women Affairs.
Aisha Buhari made the call in Yola while flagging off her pet project, the Aisha Buhari Women Health Initiative, which saw over 2,000 women being screened for various health challenges including breast and cervical cancer.
Aisha Buhari who used the occasion of the launch of her pet project to give voice to the concerns of the women in the state, expressed the misgivings of the women.
“Your Excellency the women are protesting. They have asked me to pass their wishes to you that they want to have a woman as their commissioner for women affairs. They say, you should understand that they are women and they are gender sensitive, especially when it borders on women issues “Aisha Buhari said.
Her protest was routed through the deputy governor Hon. Martins Babale who represented, his principal governor Jibrilla Bindow.
It is not yet clear whether the open appeal made by Mrs Buhari will bring about any change in the gender of the current holder of the office.
Tola who was asked to deliver his speech before the comment of the wife of the president seemed to have sensed the women protest towards him and tactically uttered just a few words of welcome before inviting the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry who is a woman, Hajiya Maisaratu Bello, to come and address the occasion.
The appointment of Tola as the first Commissioner of Women Affairs in Adamawa has sparked debate in the state with some criticizing it and others supporting it.
Those against it argued that the ministry was meant to carry women along hence the need to make it exclusively for them, while those in support said the full name of the ministry is Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development making it open for male and female to be made commissioners.
