Technical Director of the Nigeria Olympics Committee and President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Hon. Daniel Igali on Tuesday said f he was detained for over eight hours at the Brazzaville airport when he arrived for the ongoing All Africa Games for no just reason.
In a text message sent to our source, the Olympian said when he arrived at the Brazzaville airport at about 1.40pm, he was illegally detained alongside four other Nigerians.
He said although he had his accreditation with him, he was told his name was not on the list of Nigerian delegation for the games.
Igali explained that despite the quick intervention of the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut and Nigerian Embassy staff, the Congolese officials still detained him and in the process, he missed his athletes' weight control session.
He said "I arrived Brazzaville at 1.45pm. Since then, in spite of my accreditation, I have been illegally detained at the Brazzaville airport for over seven hours alongside four other Nigerians.
"I am told my name is not on a list. My Greco Roman athletes have weight control this evening without me. As I write, I am still under illegal detention at the airport.
"The NSC DG has sent officials and documents, even Nigerian Embassy staff have been here to no avail. This is malicious, wicked dehumanizing and unacceptable."
Igali however said after over eight hours he was released just as he lamented that the inhuman treatment he received in the hands of the Congolese officials amounted to undue intimidation and harassment.
"It was an act of intimidation and harassment. I am not so sure why such people should be allowed to host games of such magnitude," he said.
