Former President Mwai Kibaki has refuted reports that he owes a water company Sh500,000 bill.

"The residence of Former President Kibaki does not owe water bills to Othaya Mukurweini water company as all payments of bills for the residence are the responsibility of the government as stipulated in Kibaki's retirement package," Kibaki's spokesman Gituku Ngari told the Star on phone Friday morning.

Ngari said there have been recent transfers of staff at the company and the new staff may not be up to date with the records.

"But we hope they clear information to the public soon to avoid misunderstandings."

It had earlier been alleged that Kibaki's residence owes the Mukurweini company Sh500,000 for water debt accruing from 2013.

The palatial home built for Kibaki at a cost of Sh500 million has been unoccupied since he retired in 2013.
