Analysis: Power over credibility as Kwara awaits appointments

The delay in the appointment of commissioners in Kwara State has no doubt caused subdued apprehension among those who believed they actively worked for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general election in the state.

It is important to state that the real determinants of who gets what in this order are the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and of course the Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed.

It is indeed unusual in  the chequered political history of the State of Harmony, for political appointments to be delayed for over three months after an election.

But the leaders of the party have succeeded in containing the agitation because of the nature of Kwara politics.

The word of the political leader of the state, Sen Saraki is the law and towards this end, those who are seeking and angling to come on board have been doing so underground.

It was also gathered that the release of the list of seven special assistants, penultimate week, which had earlier been ratified by the State House of Assembly, did not quell the  apprehension as some of those on the list silently grumbled that they deserved more than being special assistants.

Investigations also revealed that the leadership has been unable to come up with acceptable list because of the need to satisfy all those who worked for the success of the party, hence the delay.

In the last elections, while many of those in the cabinet were found not to have satisfactorily delivered their constituencies as demanded by the leadership because they didn’t take care of their members, those who clearly did so have therefore assumed leadership in those constituencies.

This development, has in no small measure caused delay in the appointment of members from various constituencies as key politicians, who have influence on the leadership, have soft spots for some politicians who did not deliver their constituencies and are therefore scheming for them to return on board.

Equally important is the issue of the PDP faction of Senator Gbemisola Saraki, the younger sister of the senate president, who openly donated her political structures to APC in assisting APC win the elections in the state.

Recall that before that time, Senator. Gbemisola Saraki, who had been at logger heads with her brother over her botched governorship ambition in the state, was among key political leaders of the opposition PDP in the state, where through her political acumen, she succeeded in installing the state chairman, Iyiola Oyedepo, the secretary and the state women leader, Alhaja Nimota Oba Wankasi to the chagrin of others.

She came second in the governorship primaries of PDP in the state and was considered to have been frustrated out of the party because of her strong political influence.

The need to ensure that the supporters of Senator Saraki are also appointed to key positions in the cabinet is also said to be part of the delay.

In all of these, marabouts and clergymen are said to be feeding fat on politicians, who have been running from pillar to post seeking divine influence to get political appointments.

Anxiety, apprehension and tension were boldly written on their long faces after their visit, last Tuesday to Sen Saraki during his visit to Ilorin.
