Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi held a discussion with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo on Thursday that focused on Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the president's office said. Abbas arrived in Cairo on Wednesday along with a delegation of Palestinian government officials for a two-day visit that concluded on Thursday.

Abbas will travel to Jordan after his visit to Egypt. Egypt has for years acted as a mediator between the Palestinians and Israelis, including during the fifty days of conflict between Hamas and Israel in 2014, which killed 2,100 Palestinians and 67 Israeli soldiers.

During the talks, El-Sisi called for providing international warrants to address the concerns of Palestine and Israel, presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said in a statement, urging working within a "balanced, serious vision" to reach a "final settlement" to the Palestinian issue. Egypt welcomed an invitation extended by the Middle East Quartet mediators for talks on means to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the presidential statement also said.

El-Sisi asserted "Egypt's readiness to be positively involved in any diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a fair and comprehensive settlement," the statement added. Egypt opened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on 7 and 8 September to allow Palestinians intending to perform Hajj to travel to Saudi Arabia. Prior to his visit to Egypt, Abbas on Wednesday met with Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, in Ramallah to discuss the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the ‘standstill of the political process,’ according to MENA.
