
Four persons, who were allegedly found in possession of suspected charms, have been charged before an Ilorin Magistrate Court.
The accused, Lawal Sodiq, 25 of Ajagunle Road, Asa-Dam Area; Yusuf Abdullateef, 18 of Itakuru Area; Shetu Olayinka, 25 of Stadium Road and Wahab Mohammed, 23 of Gaa-Akanbi, all in Ilorin, were brought before the court on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and being in possession of criminal charms.
They were arrested on August 23 by a team of Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Kwara State Police Command, Ilorin, while on stop and search duty along Ijagbo/Offa Road, Kwara State.
The accused were indicted when the Toyota Camry with registration number California 4HAX975 was intercepted and a search in the car allegedly led to the recovery of criminal charms.
Police First Information Report (FIR) stated that investigation conducted at the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Ilorin, revealed that the accused criminally conspired and drove recklessly on the road whereby putting innocent citizens’ lives in danger.
The FIR added that the accused committed the offences, which contravened Sections 97 and 217 of Penal Code Law.
The prosecutor, Corporal Makozi Foluke objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them in prison custody pending the outcome of investigation.
The defence counsel, Barrister Toyin Onaolapo prayed the court to admit the accused to bail since the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria still presumed them innocent of the allegation until contrary is proved.
Magistrate B.A. Gegele upheld the submission of the defence as he released the accused on bail each at the sum of N100,000 and a surety in the same amount.
The court adjourned the case till September 29 for further hearing.
