A total of 416 shelters in El Salam camp for the displaced, near South Darfur's capital of Nyala, were left in ruins earlier this week after a barrage of heavy downpour. The rains also destroyed dozens of homes at Dereig camp in Nyala locality.

Camp sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya said that the heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday caused severe damage to the camp. "Large parts of the camp are flooded and have become impassable," he said.

Tabaldiya appealed via Radio Dabanga to humanitarian organisations to provide the displaced with tarpaulins and other shelter materials. He further called on the South Darfur health authorities to spray pesticides to prevent the spread of diseases among the more than 80,000 camp residents.

Dereig

A member of the Dereig camp youth group told our source that downpours "which lasted for hours" led to the destruction of more than 40 shelters and flooded most of the roads in the camp on Tuesday.

He appealed to South Darfur government and the humanitarian organisations "that stopped working in the camp" to intervene and provide assistance.
