President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following retirement of Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former chairman, who handed over the mantle of leadership Tuesday, at the expiration of his tenure.

Until her appointment, Zakari was a National Commissioner at INEC.

A statement by Haruna Imrana, Director of Communications for the Head of he Civil Service of the Federation, said her appointment is with effect from June 30, 2015 until the appointment of a substantive chairman for the commission.

Jega had earlier handed over to Ambassador Ahmed Wali, one of the Commissioners at INEC.
