
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Attahiru Jega bows out of office today after five years of .
Mr Jega was appointed in June 2010 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, suceeding Maurice Iwu.
Six national commissioners also end their tenure: Colonel M.K. Hammanga (rtd), Adamawa State (North East); Dr Ishmael Jikiri Igbani, Rivers State (South South); Professor Lai Olurode, Osun State (South West); Dame Gladys Nne Nwafor, Abia State (South East); Mrs Thelma Amata Iremiren, Delta State (South South), and Dr Nuru Yakubu, Yobe State (North East).
During a brief ceremony at INEC headquarters in Abuja, Jega handed over to a national commissioner, Mohammed Wali from Sokoto State, Wali becomes acting chairman of the commission.
Mr Jega conducted two general elections, 2011 and 2015, and he is the only chairman of the electoral body to conduct two general elections in Nigeria’s electoral history.
Jega has received worldwide accolade for the successful conduct of Nigeria’s 2015 general elections, which is believed to be one of Nigeria’s fairest and freest polls.
