The National Universities Commission(NUC) has approved the commencement of five new programmes at Obong University located in Akwa-Ibom State.
The university, which is one of the two privately owned institutions located in the state, got the approval to offer the following Bachelor's degree programmes: Public Administration, International Relations, Political Science, Peace Studies, Conflict Resolution, and Sociology.
This was disclosed in a letter signed by Gidado Bello Kumo and sent to the university.
According to the NUC, the new Bachelors degree programmes were approved following the result of the resource evaluation carried out by a panel of experts from the commission.
The commission said the assessment visit was carried out so as to evaluate both human and material resources that would facilitate the establishment of the new programmes.
Following the due consideration of the report submitted by the team of experts on the evaluation visit, NUC Management Committee at its 442nd meeting approved the establishment of five new programmes for the university, They are to start from the 2015/2016 academic session.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Udoudo Moses Ekanemesang, while reacting to the approval, applauded NUC for approving the new programmes, adding that the accreditation process was thorough.
Ekanemesang stressed that the effort being made by NUC accreditation team is a welcome development as it will strengthen the nation’s tertiary educational system.
The university, according to him,is ready to receive the influx of students when the new session commences in October.
The VC called on parents and guardians across the nation who want quality tertiary education that is affordable and in a serene environment to consider the institution.
Obong University, which is located at Etim Ekpo area of Akwa-Ibom State, got its licence to operate from the federal government on the recommendation of NUC on 27 May 2007.
Aside the newly approved courses, other programmes the institution offers include: Accountancy, Economics, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Microbiology.
