Gov. Ahmed
Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed is optimistic that the financial turmoil that has affected most states in recent months will soon be over because we have "agreed to look into the ongoing financial depression."
The governor disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday at the Ilorin International Airport on his arrival from Abuja where all state governors met with President Muhammadu Buhari. The federal government and the state governors agreed to look into the ongoing financial depression and then find ways to salvage those states who have found it absolutely impossible to fulfil their salary obligation to civil servants, he told the journalists.
The federal government also promised to refund monies which state governments had spent on federal projects in their various states so as to help them offset the debts incurred. This should come as a welcome fillip to those states that expended a considerable chunk of their resources on federal projects.
State governments were, however, advised to look inwards and proffer ways of increasing their internally generated revenue so as to help them cater for their recurrent expenditure.
Governor Ahmed also said that other salient issues such as the economy, the crisis in the Senate were duly discussed in the meeting. He said that the Senate crisis, currently telling on the All Progressive Congress, would definitely make the party more resilient in the long run.
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has promised to fulfil his financial obligation to civil servants and pensioners in the state before the end of June. The state has been badly hit by the dwindling federal allocation in the last eight months and it is owing workers seven months' salaries.
