UNILORIN VC LAUDS KWARA NUJ OVER PEN SCHOOL PROJECT
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has identified education as a critical foundation for every good thing in life. Ambali said this in Ilorin yesterday at the stone laying ceremony of Pen School, a brainchild of the Kwara State council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs of the University, Mr Kunle Akogun, said, that the ceremony point out that journalists are responsible citizens contributing their quota to the growth and development of education in the society.
He therefore used the medium to challenge parents and stakeholders in the education sector to equip their children with best form of education especially at the basic level. Prof. Ambali also urged members of the NUJ to cooperate with the leadership of the union in the state to ensure that the laudable project did not die a premature death.
Prof. Ambali further stated that Journalists here are in the forefront of living up to the mantra of saying that education is the foundation of every good thing in life. Apart from the fact that this school is an historic event, it also shows that journalists in Nigeria are no longer what people used to think of us.
He explains further that in the past, journalists used to be referred to as riffraff’s of the society. To the extent that even if you a grandfather, somebody would still refer you as press boy, something that can never happen in other professions. Despite the fact that journalists are as educated, if not more educated than other professionals, but people still look down on us. We cannot blame, some of our colleagues are actually the cause. But now, we know that journalists are responsible citizens of the country".
Also speaking, Chairman, State council of NUJ, Mallam Abiodun Abdulkareem, assured that the pen school project would be completed before the end of the year. He stated that the school would offer qualitative education to ensure that children are well trained for future assignments.
